Ideas for Planning Your Home OfficeWhether you plan to start a home business and work exclusively from home, or just need to telecommute on an occassional basis, you should create a home office that allows for both maximum comfort and productivity. Before starting to plan your home office, first list the functions you will need to perform. For example: 1. Use a laptop/desktop. 2. Access a phone, fax, scanner and printer. 3. Space to confer with customers or assistants 4. Space for files and supplies... (You get the idea). It is very important to list all the regular functions you need to perform so that you can incorporate each of these into your final office plan. Next, consider what space you have to convert into office space. Some areas commonly used for office space include the den/extra room, attic, garage, basement or area beneath a staircase. Avoid using the bedroom as a shared space with your office as this can lead to productivity issues. Using a shared space may also disqualify you from legally claiming deductions on your federal income tax. Once you select a defined space, determine that the correct electrical and cable outlets you need are available. In many cases, where outlets are concentrated will determine the location of your desk, as this tends to be the center of activity. Next, measure your space (length, width and height). Sketch out the empty floor plan noting basic measurements including where outlets and windows are. Keep the sketch with you while shopping for office furniture online or in stores. This way, you will not have to guess if items are the right fit before you buy them. If you are tight on space, consider using a corner desk with a retractable laptop shelf. This saves on space and ensures a more ergonomic setup that will be comfortable for you. Here are some important things for you to consider while planning the perfect office space: >If your budget allows, look for furniture with built in wire management (grommets for hiding wires). This is important for safety and a tidy appearance. >Buy a good quality shredder to protect your personal and business information. >Buy a comfortable and adjustable high-back office chair with wheels. >Add color. Brighten up the space with a colorful area rug, framed art piece and plant. >Use indirect lighting where possible (Lamps that illuminate the ceiling or wall). This will help you avoid eye strain. >Get a card holder so your business cards will always be available and on display.
